531,983. Typewriters. MOSCATELLI, R. Aug. 9, 1939, No. 23038. [Class 100 (iv)] Letter - spacing mechanism. To provide for variable - spacing, the carriage is connected to the escapement-wheel by change-speed gearing having a single keyoperated member for selecting the gear corresponding to the width of the character to be typed In the mechanism shown in Fig. 4, the carriage is provided with racks 4a, 4b, 4c gearing with pinions 3a, 3b, 3c of different diameters loosely mounted on a shaft 2 which is connected to the escapement-wheel 1. The pinions are selectively coupled to the shaft by means of a slidable cotter 5a which is normally maintained in engagement with the medium-spacing pinion 3b by means of springs. The keys for wide and narrow letters operate separate universal bars adapted to move in opposite directions a sleeve 6 in connection with the cotter, and thereby couple the pinion 3c or 3a. The type-heads of the wide and narrow letters are offset to the right and left on their type-bars.
