Abstract

[Class 80 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXXVI and XXXVII] A slide is rectilinearly movable by means of a single manual control member, with respect to a second slide, which is rectilinearly movable with respect to a framework in a direction transverse to the first. The invention is shown applied to a variable resistance comprising two resistance elements or pairs of resistance elements independently adjustable by a common control member and particularly applicable for image centreing in television receivers as described in Specification 526,361, [Group XL]. A metal frame plate 1 is covered with a sheet of insulating material 2 and carries a cruciform sheet insulator 3 on the arms of which are wound resistance elements 4. Slidable over the frame plate is an insulating plate 5 carrying four contact pins 6, 6a, which are pressed against the resistance elements 4 by means of a backing plate 7, which is slidable over four studs 8 fixed to the frame plate, the backing plate 7 being pressed against the carrier plate by springs 9. The centre portion of the backing plate 7 is cut away to allow free movement of the carrier plate 5. One or more of the contact pins 6, 6a has a spring-loaded plunger 6b. The carrier plate 5 is free to move in any direction in its own plane, vertical motion varying one pair of resistance elements and horizontal motion varying the other pair. The carrier plate 5 is operated by a lever 11 having a ball-and-socket mounting in the frame plate 1. The lever 11 may be rotatable about its axis for controlling another variable element, e.g. for controlling the magnification. In order to prevent rotation of the carrier plate 5, a guide plate 15 is provided having horizontal slots through which pass the studs 8, which studs have shoulders 8a, against which the guide plate rests and is free to move horizontally. The guide plate 15 also has vertical slots 15b through which pass two of the contact pins 6 so that the contact pins and contact carrier plate are constrained to move vertically with respect to the guide plate. The resistance elements 4 may be replaced by rows of contact segments. The mechanism may be adapted for the adjustment of mechanical valves or for the control of other sliding motions such as in variable gears.
