Abstract

531,145. Glass manufacture. UNITED GLASS BOTTLE MANUFACTURERS, Ltd., BUNCE, A., and DORMAN, E. P. July 13, 1939, No. 20412. [Class 56] A method of improving the durability of glass bottles and like containers comprises introducing a substance containing sulphur and oxygen, which decomposes and gives off acid gases when heated, into the bottles at a suitable point between the forming machine or finishing mould and the leer. The substance may consist of an ammonium salt such as ammonium sulphate or thiosulphate, and it may be used alone or combined with a retarding agent, such as ammonium carbonate. The substance may be formed into tablets or pellets which are introduced into the hot bottles by automatic means, or it may be used in the forms of crystals or powder or in solution. The apparatus for feeding pellets may comprise a rotating disc B formed near its edges with slots C. The pellets are stored in a shoot A and are removed one at a time by the slots C and dropped into the bottles which are moving along a conveyer E<SP>2</SP> between a forming- machine and the leer.
