Abstract

[Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v)] [Also in Group XXXIX] The neutralizing signals which are used to balance out echoes due to reflections in the transmission medium as described in the parent Specification are derived from an artificial line 13 having a mis-matched termination 14, and, where a trail of artificial echoes is required, a mis-matched input impedance 12 also, the reflections being fed back into the line 1. The amplitude of the neutralizing signals depends on the extent of the mis-match, and the sign of the signals, relative to the main signal, on whether the termination and input impedance are greater or less than the artificial line impedance. The attenuation-frequency characteristic of the artificial line may be corrected or the characteristic of the neutralizing signals adjusted, by the terminal impedance. The impedances may be adjusted to produce a trail of neutralizing signals all of the same sign as or opposite in sign to the main signals, or alternating in sign and commencing with a signal of the same sign as or opposite sign to the main signal.
