Abstract

530,813. Boring-bars, boring-heads, reamers, &c. STAPLES, E. M. July 4, 1939, No. 19418. Convention date, July 15, 1938. [Class 83 (iii)] An expansible tool for boring, reaming &c. has a body provided with flexible tongues extending in a circumferential direction and provided at their free ends with cutting edges, wedging means being provided for adjusting the free ends outwardly and clamping means for securing the tongues against the wedging means. The body 10 is provided with circumferential saw-cuts 13 to form flexible tongues 12 carrying integral or separate cutters 20. The tongues are expanded outwardly by tapered pins 15 driven in axially, and are then clamped rigidly by radial screws 17 arranged singly or in axial rows. When considerable expansion is required the pins 15 may be replaced by wedges 31, Fig. 5, with rounded edges shaped to engage the recesses 32 throughout their axial adjustment, or the pins may be replaced by tapered screws. Flexing of the tongues 12 about their ends 27 during expansion increases the peripheral clearance angle of the cutters. The body 10 may be mounted by means of its central aperture 11 on a boring-bar supported at both ends, or may receive or be formed integral with a shank so as to constitute a boring-head.
