Abstract

530,558. Motor vehicles. GEAR GRINDING MACHINE CO. June 27, 1939, No. 18719. Convention date, May 26. [Classes 79 (iii), 79 (iv) and 79 (v)] In a vehicle propelled by two engines the front engine A drives an axle K through a propeller shaft, and the rear engine J is at a higher level than the first and drives a rearmost axle K' through-a a propeller shaft passing above the axle K. The engines may be used independently or together and are controlled by a single accelerator pedal S and a clutch pedal R. The two change-speed gears are controlled by gear levers T, T', and may be coupled to act together by a crossbar T', Fig. 3. The gear lever T' operates shift rods T<SP>4</SP> in a control box T<SP>2</SP>, these rods being connected by push-and-pull cables T<SP>6</SP> to the shift rods of the gear-box of the engine J. Torque tubes L, N' are provided for the axles K, K', and are connected by ball joints L<SP>1</SP>, N to the chassis frame. The axles are provided with brackets M<SP>2</SP> pivoted to the ends of lower springs M', upper springs M<SP>3</SP> having their ends sliding on the axles. The two sets of springs have central bearings M<SP>4</SP> engaging trunnions M<SP>5</SP> on brackets M<SP>6</SP> secured to the frame. The frame comprises main side channel members B reinforced by extension channel members F which fit over the members B and extend beyond the rear thereof. The engine J is supported on other channel members I resting on and secured to the forward ends of the members F. The engines are preferably V-engines and the rear one J is enclosed in a bonnet O having side louvres O<SP>1</SP> and rear openings O<SP>2</SP> through which air is drawn by fans Q driven by a belt Q<SP>4</SP> from the usual fan pulley Q'. The radiators P, P' are arranged obliquely as shown in Fig. 5 adjacent to the louvres O<SP>1</SP> and the cooling water is sent by the pumps J<SP>1</SP>, J<SP>2</SP> in series through both banks and the radiators to ensure equal cooling of the cylinders.
