Abstract

530,547. Refrigerating. INGERSOLL-RAND CO. June 27, 1939, No. 18673. Convention date, July 14, 1938. [Class 29] Vacuum systems.-Liquid seal devices are provided between main and auxiliary evaporator chambers 6, 8 of a system having separately controlled steam-jet exhausters 9 discharging to a condenser 13, so that when any evaporator chamber is rendered -inactive by shutting off the steam supply to its exhauster, the refrigerant (water) flows only to the active evaporator. The cooled liquid is withdrawn from the bottom of the evaporators through risers 17, 18 connected to a pipe 16 and circulating pump 16a, the risers ensuring retention of liquid in the pipes at all times. The liquid to be cooled enters through a pipe 37 at the bottom of liquid seals 23, 33 formed by a depending baffle 5 and weir overflows 24, 32, the former being higher and discharging into evaporator chamber 6, while the latter is adapted to discharge into further seals 34, 28 of lesser height formed by a depending baffle 7 and a weir 29. The riser 17 is connected with a seal formed by a weir 20 and baffle 21 in a space maintained at condenser pressure by a pipe 22, and the space between the baffles 5, 7 is maintained at condenser pressure by a branch pipe 35. Deflecting plates 27, 31 are placed over the weir discharges to intercept spray and prevent it from entering the exhaust ports 10. When both chambers are active the incoming liquid flows over weir 24 and from the chamber 6 through a byepass passage 36 below the seals 23, 33 to seal 28 and over weir 29. If chamber 8 is rendered inactive it immediately assumes condenser pressure and liquid ceases to flow through seal 28. Cooled liquid leaves chamber 6 by seal 19 and riser 17. If chamber 6 is shut down and chamber 8 kept active, liquid flows by seals 33, 34, 28 &c. over weir 29 to chamber 8 only, and is discharged through riser 18. If both are shut down, incoming liquid passes to seal 34 and flows through byepass 36 and chamber 6 to the outlet 17 with little or no heating- up of the liquid.
