Abstract
529,867. Gas-blast switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 9, 1939, No. 16971. Convention date, June 9, 1938. Addition to 487,585. [Class 38 (v)] In order to avoid the entry of rain through the opened contacts and into the switch-arms of the switch of the parent Specification, the arms, together with the quenching heads thereon, are caused to be rotated through approximately 180 degrees from the closed-circuit to the opencircuit position. In Fig. 1, which shows only part of the co-operating pole, the arm 5 and heads 6 are each rotated to the dotted, open position by means of a rack 7 guided in the insulator 2. The arm 5 carries a pinion 10 engaging one set of rack teeth, the other set of which engages a pinion 11, pinions 10, 11 being rigid with the meshing pinions 13, 12, respectively, whereby unbalance in the loading of the rack is avoided. Alternatively each arm may carry a pinion meshing with oppositely-moving racks on either side of it, the racks being coupled below to the ends of a centrally-pivoted rocking- lever, Fig. 2 (not shown).
