[Class 97 (iii)] [Also in Group XIII] Two bimetallic helical coils a, c are co-axially arranged one within the other and are attached at d. The opposite end of the outer coil is secured at b to a casing h, and the opposite end of the inner coil carries a spindle e with pointer g. The coil a has the metal of higher co-efficient on the outside, and the coil c on the inside, so that the movements in response to temperature changes are additive. Distortion of the two coils due to internal stresses is in opposite directions and can be made to cancel out so that the zero position is unchanged. The coils are applicable to temperature measurement, or electric switches. A hollow metal cylinder i may be arranged within the inner coil to facilitate equalization of temperature in the coils.
