Abstract

529,035. Photographic anti-halation layers. KODAK, Ltd. (Eastman Kodak Co.). April 6, 1939, No. 10832. [Class 98 (ii)] [Also in Group IV] Polyvinyl resins, particularly alkali-soluble resins suitable for anti-halation coatings for photographic films and plates, are obtained by causing a polyvinyl ester of a monobasic acid to react with the anhydride of a di- or polycarboxylic acid in the presence of water, the reaction being carried out in an organic solvent both for the starting materials and the resin formed which solvent is miscible With water. Preferably the starting ester is that of a monocarboxylic acid, e.g., acetate, propionate, butyrate, acetate-propionate or acetate-butyrate. Specified di- and polycarboxylic acids are maleic, succinic, phthalic, glutaric and diglycollic. The reaction may be carried out in an autoclave, or under reflux. Specified solvents are methyl ethyl ketone, acetone, ethyl alcohol, ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, alcoholacetone mixtures and benzene-ethyl alcohol mixtures. Anti-halation coatings are obtained by incorporating a dyestuff in a solution of the resin and applying such solution to the photographic film &c. Examples are given of the production of resins from polyvinyl acetate of reaction with phthalic anhydride.
