528,585. Testing physical qualities of materials. PRISTON, H. R., HOTHERSALL, A. W., and LEADBEATER, C. J. April 28, 1939, No. 12734. [Class 106 (ii)] Apparatus for testing the adhesions of protective coatings such as metal coatings on a metal base comprises one or more bodies for contacting a small area of the surface under test to deliver on this area a number of light blows. In the form shown in Fig. 1, iron shot of the type used in shot-blasting are poured into a reservoir a and allowed to fall on the surface b to be tested, the open end of the reservoir tube being about half an inch above the specimen. The latter is supported in a container c so that the shot may be recovered. In a modification, the reservoir a is fitted with an elongated nozzle at the bottom and a low pressure air pipe is connected at the top to force the shot out. A byepass connected below the shot to the nozzle assists the process. In a further modification a round steel ball attached to the end of a steel arm or a steel rod with rounded end is vibrated by an electric bell circuit or by a solenoid. The hammer is mounted in a loose bearing so that it " wanders " over the selected area or the area is moved so that the blows are distributed.
