Abstract
528,114. Ammunition cartridges. ALUMINIUM-INDUSTRIE-AKT.-GES. April 13, 1939, No. 11264. Convention date, April 13, 1938. [Class 9 (i)] Cartridge cases of aluminium alloy are provided, at least on the outside, with a protective coating of incombustible and substantially infusible inorganic aluminium compound which is produced, as by anodic treatment, at the expense of the metal of the case. The coating has a minimum thickness of 40Á, and protects the metal of the case against " burning " if gas escapes through a crack. Oxide, fluoride, phosphate and silicate coatings are applicable by the anodic treatment; and if the basic alloy is difficult to treat by this method, it may be first plated with pure aluminium or with an aluminium alloy which can be oxidised by electric treatment. Specification 455,761 is referred to.
