Abstract
527,413. Controlling aircraft. ROUANET, R. L. M. F., and REY, F. V. A. J. April 11, 1939, No. 11007. Convention date, April 12, 1938. [Class 4] An aircraft has each of its wings pivotally mounted on the central body of the aircraft and elastically connected in a position of equilibrium to the body, and also has pivoted control surfaces provided at the rear of the aircraft (tail-plane elevators) and/or on the wings (ailerons), adapted to be deflected simultaneously in the same direction or in differential directions. The wings 1 are pivoted about oblique axes 2 and are elastically-connected by devices 3 to a lever 4. In one form, the tail surfaces 21 are adiusted together and in the same direction on rearward or forward movement of a member 6a mounted in bearings 14 and through levers 15 secured to shafts 11 and links 16. Rotation of a handwheel 5 through level gearing and the lever 15 adjust differentially the surfaces 21. In a modification, Fig. 2, lateral movement of a joy-stick 31 rotates a sleeve 38 which through arms 39 adjusts differentially the tail surfaces whereas fore-and-aft movement of the stick adjusts the tail surfaces together in the same direction, the sleeve 38 being free to turn but not to move axially on a shaft 40 pivotally mounted in the aircraft. Ailerons 59, Fig. 3, may be, mounted on the wings and are operated through lever and link mechanism from a shaft 44 which is connected through a cardan-joint 43 to the shaft 8 such, that the shaft 44 partakes of the rotation of the shaft 8 but is unaffected by fore-and-aft movements thereof. The lever- and-link mechanism may be mounted at the axis 2 so that the ailerons are or are not affected by movement of the wings about the axes 2. A clutch under control of the pilot may be provided whereby the control of the surfaces 21 may be rendered independent of the ailerons 59 and means may be provided whereby the ailerons are locked when the clutch is opened. The aileron control may be transmitted through a toothed-wheel 83, Fig. 6, which meshes with a rack formed by cutting teeth 84 on a circular rod which carries a block 85 in which slides the arms of a fork 88 transmitting movements to the aileron operating links 54.
