Abstract
502,093. Control-transmitting mechanism for vehicles. SAUNDERS, R. Sept. 9, 1937, No. 24591. [Class 79 (v)] [Also in Group XXXIII] In means for controlling vehicles, in which rotation and axial movement of a connecting rod transmits independently operational move. ment to two controls, two operating devices one for each movement are provided and are con. nected to the rod so that operation of one does not affect the position of the other. In one form, movement of a joystick through a lever b, connecting rod a, links a<1>, a lever c, a link f and a, horn d adjusts an elevator d<1>. The rod a is guided in self-aligning bearing g and may be subdivided the various parts being connected by universal-joints a<3>. The middle portion of the rod a is mounted for angular adjustment and is connected at its ends to the non-rotary portion by screw threads of similar pitch. The rod is tubular and passes through a sleeve ; i in a gear-box ! disposed in the pilot's cockpit. The sleeve is connected by feathers i<1> and grooves a<2> to the rod. The sleeve carries a bevel-gear k meshing with a bevel-gear l rotatable by a hand wheel l<2>. The sleeve and bevel gears are duplicated at the other end of the rod a and a sprocket wheel m replaces the hand wheel l<2> and is connected through a lever mounted at or near the hinge of the elevator d<1> to a tab n. The chain and sprocket may be replaced by a. drum and cable an arm or a shaft. In a modification, the sleeves are formed with a sprocket wheel and are mounted in tixed bearings, the screw connections between the parts of the rod u are replaced by bearings, a screw and nut being provided in the rod to facilitate trimming.
