Abstract
753,423. Convertible aircraft. MINISTERIO DA AERONAUTICA. Aug. 30, 1954, No. 25145/54. Class 4. In a convertible aircraft having wings and propellers for providing lift and propulsion respectively in forward flight and in which the wings and the propellers are movable about an axis or axes transverse to the aircraft whereby the wings may become ineffective with the propellers exerting direct lift on the aircraft, the control mechanism between a pilot's control member and a controlled element, such as an aileron or blade pitchchanging mechanism, is automatically rendered operative or inoperative by pivotal movement of the wings and the propellers. A wing is shown in continuous dotted lines in a position for forward flight and in chain-dotted lines in a displaced position for vertical flight. The wing carries an aileron 24 having a spar 21 mounted for pivotal movement in bearings 22 and a lever 20 on the spar is connected by a rod 18 to a crank-pin 17 on a crank 16 mounted on the outer end of a torque shaft 12 supported by the wing spar 15. The inner end of shaft 12 carries an arm 11 which is connected by a link 10 and a lever 8 to a rock-shaft 1 operated by lateral rocking movement of a pilot-operated control column 5. The arrangement of the parts of the mechanism adjacent the aileron is such that with the wing in position for forward flight the axes of the crank 16 and the rod 18 are substantially at right angles whereby lateral movement of column 5 causes aileron movement. When the wing is moved to a position in which its chord is substantially vertical the aforementioned axes are aligned and no movement of the aileron results from movement of the control column. It is stated that similar mechanism is incorporated in the blade pitch-changing mechanism whereby, with the ailerons inoperative, the pitch change mechanism becomes operative and vice versa.
