Abstract
526,945. Vibration-dampers; reciprocating pumps; valves. CLOUDSLEY, J. L. Dec. 22, 1938, Nos. 37320/38 and 7270/39. [Class 108 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIX] In a shock-absorber of the kind in which a piston in a cylinder carries a valve which is raised from its seating by excess fluid pressure, the valve bears against a member sufficiently to cause the seating on the member to " follow-up " the valve as it is moved by the fluid pressure, such " follow-up " movement being dependent on the resistance offered to the flow of fluid through a restricted passage or orifice. In the recuperative stroke of the piston 2, Fig. 1 (37320/38), a valve 10 formed of superposed laminae is lifted from its seat 3 to aliow fluid to flow through the piston. In the shock-absorbing stroke, the liquid is forced through a helical passage between a member 6 and truncated threads on a sliding plug 13. Excessive pressure forces the valve from its seating 7. The member 6 slides in a cylinder 4 to form a dashpot within the main dashpot and may have a central bore provided with a non-return valve, or a non-return valve may be provided in an inlet aperture at the inner end of the cylinder 4. A valve member 4, Fig. 1 (7270/39), at the centre of laminae 3 slides in a plate 5 spaced from the laminae and is secured to a flexible steel diaphragm 6 bearing against the plate. A dome-shaped member 7 formed with an aperture 8 is held in fluid-tight contact with the diaphragm by a spring 9 and forms with the diaphragm and valve 4 an inner dashpot. Upon a sudden movement of the piston to the right, the plates 3 are lifted from their seating 13. With slower movement, liquid passes through the aperture 8 and forces the diaphragm and valve 4 to follow up the leftward movement of the plates until further movement is arrested by a flange on the valve seating in a recess 14 in the plate 5. "Follow-up devices may be provided on both sides of the plates 3, the valve 4 having closure members on opposite sides of the plates 5, which are held loosely at their outer edges. The shock-absorber pistons above described may be used as pistons in fluid pumps.
