Abstract

[Also in Division F1] An hydraulic device comprises a vessel divided into two chambers by an internal bellows constituted by a stack of pre-stressed metal washers at least some of which are dished and at least some of which are resilient. The device may form part of an hydraulic ram, Fig. 3, in which a cylinder 30 is divided into two chambers by a bellows of pre-compressed washers 31 closed at one end by a piston 32 and at the other end by a closure member 34. The piston is spaced from the cylinder by four peripheral projections 32a on the piston so that the bellows acts as a seal between the cylinder and the piston and also provides a spring force resisting movement of the piston in response to fluid supplied through a port 37. In a second embodiment the device is incorporated in a valve, Fig. 4, for maintaining a substantially constant flow rate therethrough. The valve comprises a vessel 42 divided into two chambers by a bellows constituted by a stack of pre-loaded metal washers 43. The bellows is responsive to the pressure difference between the two chambers and has an end-plate 44 carrying a control element which coacts with a sleeve 48 to control the flow from the inner chamber to an outlet 49. The outer chamber is subjected to the static inlet pressure through a passage 41 and the inner chamber is subjected to the pressure after throttling by a variable restrictor 46. If the flow increases the throttled pressure in the inner chamber decreases and the bellows contracts to reduce the flow from the inner chamber into the sleeve 48. The compression of the bellows may be adjusted by screws 50.
