[Class 81 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXXVI, XVIII, XX and XXXVIII] The presence of magnetic metal articles e.g. pistols or knives on a person passing through a doorway, vehicles passing traffic signal points, metallic particles in foodstuffs, or in the human body, is detected by moving the object or person under test relative to the field of a permanent magnet, whereby any metal present induces an e.m.f. in a pair of similar coils embracing the magnet to operate a visual, or audible signal, if desired, through an amplifier. The coils are connected in opposition to prevent operation of the signal by extraneous magnetic effects. In the detection of armed intruders, the device may be combined with means for taking photographs. Devices responsive to passage of vehicles may show up advertising signs.
