526,780. Optical polarizers. KASEMANN, E. April 24, 1939, Nos. 12315 and 12316. Convention dates, April 25, 1938, and June 28, 1939. [Class 97 (i)] Polarizers comprising coloured vigorously stretched foils of organic colloids are dyed substantially only in the surface layers. The polarizers may be as described in Specification 512,863, and dyeing may be effected after stretching and drying. Swelling of the foils during dyeing is avoided, and the foils may be treated with astringents immediately prior to or during dyeing. Dyeing may be effected by various organic dyes, or by inorganic substances such as iodine, selenium, bismuth, tellurium &c. and details of the dyeing process are described. The coloured foils may be protected by a non-porous colourless layer and enclosed between glass plates having a high absorption for short wave lengths. The stretching may be effected as described in Specification 512,863.
