Abstract

525,732. Tempering glass and metal. ROMANIN (nee DRUFUCA), N. Feb. 27, 1939, No. 6446. Convention date, Aug. 31, 1938. [Class 56] [Also in Group II] In a process for tempering sheets or articles of glass or metal, the chilling-device is so arranged that a plate passes through one or more relatively narrow chilling-zones as it emerges from the furnace. The chilling-device 5, Fig. 3, is placed close to the outlet of the furnace 2 and it may comprise a single group of coolers, or two or more groups separated from one another by a suitable distance a. The sheet 1 is moved slowly and continuously out of the furnace and is cooled in successive zones 10a, 10b. Fig. 3, which move along the sheet. The device that supports the sheet may be mounted on wheels which are secured eccentrically to their axles, so that the sheet moves with an undulating motion. Additional heaters 9 are placed at the outlet of the furnace to prevent premature cooling of the emerging sheet. Each cooler comprises a number of nozzles through which air, gases, liquids, or mixtures of these are blown on to the sheet. The positions of the nozzles on their supports, and the distances between adjacent nozzles, are adjustable, and the coolers can be moved both horizontally and vertically through a short distance, in order to secure an even distribution of the cooling-effect.
