Abstract
477,156. Tempering glass. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST.-GOBAIN, CHAUNY, & CIREY. June 22, 1936, No. 17340. Convention date, June 21, 1935. [Class 56] Apparatus for cooling glass during the operation of tempering comprises an enclosure adapted to contain the glass and having through its walls both jet orifices for the cooling medium and exit passages interspersed with the jet orifices, the exit passages being of such a size that the cooling medium blown against the glass at any point is evacuated in the immediate neighbourhood of that point. A sheet of glass b is introduced into an enclosure formed by two half casings a having abutting flanges c. The casings a consist of chambers k into which air is blown through flexible pipes f<1>, and the inner wall of each casing is provided with jet orifices g uniformly distributed over the surface of the wall. Interspersed among the orifices g are exit passages formed by tubes h<1> which pass through the walls of the casings so as to connect the space around the glass with the open air. The cooling air entering by each orifice g escapes through the surrounding exit passages h<1> and there is no flow of air over the surface of the glass. The casing may be of other shapes than that shown in order to be suitable for cooling articles other than sheets, e.g., articles of channel shape. In cases where non-uniform cooling is desired, the sizes of the jets or their distance apart is varied. Other cooling media than air may be used, such as steam, or water in a fine state of division suspended in air or steam.
