[Class 31 (i)] A tyre grooving machine comprises an upright 1 and cross member 2 with projecting rollers 5 on which the. tyre is supported and rotated by means of a serrated roller 8 driven by a handle 10 and carried by a slide 9 movable up and down on the foot 1 by a screw 15 and hand wheel 17, the slide 9 carrying a forme with supporting bars 21 for a holder for a U-shaped cutter 11 which cuts grooves in the tyre. The roller 8 is set at an angle to prevent the tyre moving off its supports, the side pressure thus put on the tyre being taken by rollers 43, 44. The cutter block is adjustable vertically in its holder by a screw and wing nut 40 to adjust the depth of cut and the cutter holder is adjustable transversely by a screw spindle 22 and hand wheel 24, which screw spindle is movable axially but is normally held in the position shown by a coil spring 25 acting' between the plate 9 and hand wheel 24. Means are provided for obtaining a wavy groove by reciprocating the spindle 22 automatically during the operation of the machine comprising a rocking lever 27 oscillated by a cam 31 on the end of the roller 8 and forked at 28 to engage a nut 29 on the spindle 22, the return movement of the lever 27 being effected by the spring 25. When only a straight groove is required to be cut a washer 42 is removed from a position at one end of the roller 8 to a position at the other end of the roller spindle to keep the cam follower 30 of the rocking lever 27 out of engagement with the cam.
