Abstract

426,748. Tyre-grooving machines. HUTCHESON, G. M., 14, Regent Street, London. March 29, 1934, No. 9884. [Class 31 (i)] In a tyre-grooving machine for cutting circumferential grooves, having a plurality of rollers to support the side walls and tread of the tyre, a cutting device is provided which may remain stationary or may be moved transversely whilst cutting so as to form wavy grooves, common driving means serving both to rotate the rollers contacting with the tyre tread and to reciprocate the cutter. The tyre driving rollers c are mounted transversely in the frame of the machine and are driven through bevel gears from a shaft h having a handle k, the tyre being held in contact with the rollers c, which are suitably roughened, by a roller 10 mounted on the upper ends of rods 6 and bearing resiliently on the upper portion of the tyre. The tyre is guided by rollers band b<1>, mounted substantially radially and shaped to fit the side of the tyre, the rollers b being movable towards or away from one another by means of a hand wheel o and oppositely screw threaded portions of a shaft n engaging brackets l, rocking of the brackets about the shaft n being prevented by a stationary rod p. The rollers b<1> may be similarly mounted, or may be carried, as shown, on brackets 3 slidable on rods 4, 5, and having clamping screws 3<a>. The cutting tool q is set up in a bracket r, carried by a sleeve v, which can be fixed in any position along a shaft t by means of screws w engaging a groove x in the shaft. This shaft t is driven through bevel gears from the same shaft h as the driving rollers c. The bracket r is formed with a downward extension s, which engages the rod p to prevent rocking of the cutting tool and carries a screw u for adjusting the position of the cutting tool. Within the bracket r is mounted a ball y, which engages in a cam groove z in the sleeve r, so causing the bracket r, carrying the cutting tool, to reciprocate and, consequently, forming curved, wavy, or zig-zag grooves in the tyre tread. The ball may be released from engagement with the groove by slackening a screw 2, when it is desired to cut straight circumferential grooves. The frame of the machine is provided with wheels 13 to facilitate moving it from place to place.
