[Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVI] Soldering.-A method of continuously making metal container blanks comprises electrolytically depositing a protective metal on a travelling strip of metal to form a number of spaced narrow band-like coatings of said protective metal, applying non- metallic coatings such as resinous coatings so that they cover the areas not coated with protective metal and also overlap the previously applied coatings of metal. Strip 10 from a roller 11 is fed through a cleaning bath A, through an electroplating apparatus B where it is given a coating of tin along side bands 12 and a centre band 13, through another cleaning bath C, a coating apparatus D where a non-metallic coating is applied, then through a printing apparatus E and finally through a cutting apparatus F in which the strip is cut along lines 13 and 27 to form separate container blanks. The electroplating apparatus comprises a tank 14 into which the strip is passed twice by means of two internal two-part rollers 16 and three external rollers 17. At each side of the strip opposite the bands 12, 13 are electrodes 21, 22 and 23, 24. Deposition of metal on the intermediate parts of the strip is prevented by rubber shields 19 on the two part rollers and by rubber shields 20 guided over pulleys so as to move with the strip.
