Abstract

524,988. Boots &c. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and HAZELTON, G. Jan. 12. 1939, No. 1019. [Class 17 (i)] Relates to methods of securing pretrimmed heels, such as are described in Specification 412,599, to shoes, wherein a tapered heelward position of an outsole extending only a short distance rearward of the heel breast line is received in a groove at the upper end of the heel breast, such as is described in Specification 421,882, and consists of methods of fitting such a heel to a shoe in which the marginal portion of the heelward end of the outsole is very substantially reduced in thickness as compared with the thickness of its central portion. In one construction, Figs. 1 - 3, the upper end of the heel breast is formed with a groove 13 of V- shaped cross-section ; the lower wall of which is inclined upwardly and rearwardly, as shown in Fig. 3. The groove 13, Fig. 1, extends right across the heel but is cut in such a way as to provide a lip 15 which is thickest at its centre portion 17, and emerges into the concave upper surface 11 of the heel at its front corners along lines 19. The outsole 21, Fig. 2, the marginal portions of which are substantially reduced in thickness in the waist, is acted upon by a machine of the type described in Specification 510,533 so that its heelward end portion tapers rearwardly from the heel-breast line 25, the central portion having a comparatively long taper, as indicated at 27, whereas at its side surfaces the outsole has a comparatively short taper 29. When the heel is fitted to the shoe so that the tapered heelward end portion of the outsole fits into the groove 13, the short tapered portion 29 mates with the end portions 19, Fig. 1, of the groove 13, and the edge of the outsole forms a line which is substantially continuous with the edge of the heel. In a second construction, Figs. 4 - 6, the groove 33 in the heel is more transversely curved than the groove 13 in the first construction, emerging at 39 wholly within the attaching face 35. The tapered heelward end of the outsole 41 is shaped as shown at 43, 45, Fig. 5, and when the heel is fitted to the shoe, the point presents the appearance shown in Fig. 6. Specifications 331,934, [Class 17 (i)], 447,329, 454,097, 481,882, [Group VTII], and 501,447, also are referred to.
