Abstract

[Class 140] A web coated with liquid coating material is moved with a translatory motion from a region of inferior pressure to a region of superior pressure through a slot which permits a stream of air to flow over the coated web in a direction opposed to that of the web. As shown in Fig. 2, a paper web 12, from the drying cylinder of a paper machine, is passed between a supporting- roll 16 and a coating roll 17 supplied from a pan 21. The exit side of the rolls is closed by a chamber 23 furnished with an adjustable lip 29 defining a slot 33. The chamber is connected to a pump by pipes 40. Excess coating. material overflows through a pipe 39. Fig. 7 shows a modification in which the coating material is supplied to a trough 50 arranged in the nip of the rolls 43, 45 and in which the chamber 55 is V-shaped. In a further modification, Fig. 8, the chamber is formed by rolls 118, 119 the roll 119, which may be recessed, and supporting-roll 116 defining the slot. Excess coating material is withdrawn through the suction pipe 123 to a settling drum 124. Coating material is supplied via troughs 128, 129, or it may be supplied to the chamber. The web may be diawn over a stationary surface. Webs of fabric, felt &c. may be similarly coated.
