Abstract
523,122. Chewing-gum. PETER PAUL, Inc. Dec. 23, 1938, No. 37466. Convention date, Dec. 24, 1937. [Classes 28 (i) and 81 (i)] Activated carbon is added to chewing-gum to absorb the flavouring materials and yield them up during the chewing in such manner as to prolong flavour-retention, and to sweeten the mouth by removing odorous and toxic substances. The amount of carbon used is from 2 per cent. to 4 per cent. by weight of the finished gum, and is preferably about 3 per cent. Proportions of materials are 20 pounds of gum base, 20 pounds of glucose, 60 pounds of sugar, 3“ pounds of activated carbon and 16 ounces of flavouring material, the ingredients being. compounded and mixed in the manner usual in the art. The activated carbon used is preferably that made from waste soda liquor obtained in the manufacture of wood pulp, and it is ground to 100 mesh or finer. U.S.A. Specifications 1,052,872, 1,416,242, and 1,741,589 are referred to.
