522,825. Ciphering apparatus. GARNIER, G. Dec. 19, 1938, Nos. 36885 and 36886. Convention dates, Jan. 6 and April 1. [Class 146 (ii)] A ciphering and deciphering device consists of an apertured member beneath which a number of movable elements is arranged so that characters carried by the movable-elements are exposed in the apertures. In one form, a cover 111 is hinged to a base 112 in such a way as. to leave a space for an element rotatable on a pin 114. The cover is formed with a number of radially arranged apertures 118 and with the letters of the alphabet and, if desired, other characters adjacent the apertures in correct order. Rotatable on the pin 114 is an element composed of discs 115, 116, the latter having a slotted edge, the teeth and the gaps being equal in angular width to that of the apertures 118. The discs can be adjustably secured together so that different sections of the disc 115 can be exposed. Letters and other characters are inscribed in arbitrary order on the teeth of the disc 116 and on the disc 115 and are arranged to be visible in different combinations through the apertures 118. A graduated arc-shaped slot 119 in the cover enables the discs to be moved desired distances, the slot exposing spaced apertures 120 in the discs engageable by the stylus. Modifications employing different numbers of variously-slotted discs are also described: The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the use of endless bands or drums. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
