Abstract

522,556. Dynamometers. PLESSEY CO., Ltd., and COSTA, H. DA. Dec. 16, 1938, No. 36726. [Class 106 (ii)] Apparatus for testing cartridges for use in starting internal-combustion engines comprises a rotatable load member, a chamber receiving the combustible charge and communicating with a fluid-pressure operated device for driving the load member, and means for recording the torque applied to the load and for the displacement of the load on combustion of the charge. A load disc 10 fixed on the shaft 11 which is mounted on bearings in members 12, 13 of the framework carries detachable weights 14 which correspond with the moment of inertia of a rotary aircraft engine of the type it is desired to start. A blade drum 15 fixed to the shaft 11 has around it a band 16 connected to short arms of operating levers 17, 18 pivoted on member 13. The long arms of the levers are connected to spring balances supported by screw-threaded bars 21 movable relatively to the frame by handwheels 22 to adjust the static friction load according to the engine represented by the load member. A sleeve 24 rotatable on the shaft 11 carries a plate 25 supporting the cylinder of a device 26 of the kind described in Specification 478,313, [Group XXI], the cylinder being connected by a pipe 27 to a chamber 28 for receiving the cartridge to be tested. Upon explosion of the cartridge the driving dog 29 is driven outwardly to engage a dog 30 fixed to the shaft 11 and then to rotate the shaft in the direction of the arrow 31. A turntable 33 for a record sheet is driven from a constant speed motor and has moving across it a stylus carried by a slide 36 connected by a cord 37 fastened to a lay shaft 39 driven by a belt 41 from the shaft 11. The slide 36 is restrained by a cord connected to a weight. The sleeve 24 which has a limited movement relatively to the frame carries a reaction arm connected to the piston of a piston and cylinder device. A pipe 48 from the cylinder of this device leads to a cylinder 49 the piston of which is connected to a pivoted arm 51 carrying a stylus moving over a recording drum 52 moved by cord, link and cam gear from the shaft 39 proportionately to the movement of the load member. A revolution indicator 46 is driven from the shaft 11. The chart on turntable 33 reads travel with respect to time and the drum 52 gives a record of torque which may be against time if desired by arranging a drive for the drum.
