Abstract

522,415. Flexible engine-mountings. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D., HALFORD, F. B., and VICKERS, C. F. Nov. 5, 1938, No. 32088. [Class 108 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXVI and XXXI] A flexible mounting applicable to aircraft engines, comprises a tubular member A having a series of parallel internally projecting rectangular plates A', and an inner member comprising a web B in a diametral plane with a series of projecting rectangular plates B' extending into the recesses formed by the plates A'. Strips or pads of rubber C are bonded to the surfaces of the plates. The inner member is formed with a bore B<SP>2</SP> to receive a shaft which may be a part of the supporting structure, while the outer member is adapted to be secured in a housing fixed to the engine. The mounting gives flexibility in directions parallel to the plates but comparative rigidity in a direction at right angles thereto. Relative movement is limited by the ends of the plates coming into contact with the other member, and metal or resilient packing may be inserted into the base of the recesses. Means may also be provided to limit relative movement in a direction at right-angles to the plates. In a modification, the plates may be inclined to the axis of the outer member, or may be helical. As applied to. an engine mounting, Fig. 4, the frame comprises side members E, with cross tubes F which carry the inner members B of the flexible mountings. The outer members A are secured in housings G carried by feet D<SP>1</SP> on the underside of the engine, the pairs of housings being connected by tubes G<SP>1</SP>. In an alternative construction, Fig. 6, each member comprises a flat base J from which the parallel plates J<SP>1</SP> project into the spaces between plates H<SP>2</SP> of the opposing member H, which is constructed as a bracket In another modification, the flat base plates from the faces of which the plates project may be arranged in a vertical plane. The plates in each mounting may be arranged at right angles to the diagonal of the quadrilateral on which they lie, Fig. 10, not shown, and in all cases the plates are arranged so that they are at a substantial angle to the diagonal of the quadrilateral.
