Abstract
522,213. Treating fecal matter and refuse. MILLS & CO. (ENGINEERS). Ltd., J., and BOLTON, J. F. Dec. 8, 1938. No. 35757. [Class 111] Fecal matter and refuse is tipped from collecting carts on to a grille a<SP>2</SP>and forced therethrough into a tank a by jets of water from a pipe a<SP>4</SP> assisted, if necessary, by hand-operated poles or scrapers. The resulting'sludge is withdrawn by a disintegrating pump b and delivered through a pipe b<SP>1</SP>into a digestion tank c. The tank c, is provided with a central circulating pipe d up which the sludge is drawn by a screw - pump d' driven by a motor d<SP>3</SP>. Gas given off during the digestion collects in a dome e and passes to the gas holder e'. Settled sludge is withdrawn through a pipe c<SP>2</SP>and an overflow box c<SP>5</SP>or a pipe c<SP>3</SP>with a valve g. Draw-off valves f for supernatant liquid are provided at different levels, these valves being connected to a pipe with valve g<SP>1</SP>.To prevent entry of air to the tank c the valves g, g<SP>1</SP>are lever-operated and connected by wires to the movable bell of the gas-holder e<SP>3</SP> in such manner that they cannot be opened when the gas-holder is empty. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 516,577.
