Abstract

521,838. Automatic control systems for moving coils. HOLMES & CO., Ltd., J. H., KASSELL, E. D., and WALTON, J. W. W. Sept. 29, 1938, No. 7297/40. Divided out of 520,727. [Class 38 (iv)] Tension in moving webs such as paper and other strip material, cords, wires &c. is maintained constant by an electronic valve the output of which is used to control'the rate of supply and/or take-up of the moving material. A jockey roller or other follower displaced in accordance with variations in the tension causes variation in the timing of electrical impulses applied to the grid circuit of the valve. Gas discharge or vacuum valves may be used. A transformer L<SP>4</SP> supplies current to the anode circuit of a valve L<SP>3</SP> which includes for example a solenoid A<SP>4</SP> controlling the force applied on a brake A' loading the working material A or the shunt winding of a tension control motor acting upon a stop which bears upon a web roll. Current is likewise supplied to a grid bias potentiometer L<SP>2</SP> and this bias is periodically removed at an instant in each cycle depending on the tension in the material. A block K<SP>2</SP> may be adjusted in relation to a commutator driven by a synchronous motor K<SP>9</SP> by movements of a jockey roller B so that contacts on the block are short-circuited by a shaped conducting plate K' to remove the grid bias and ignite the valve at the instant in each cycle requisite to maintain the tension constant. The jockey roller may be spring or weight controlled or counterbalanced and the tension may be adjusted by varying this control force or the potential applied to the transformer L<SP>4</SP>. Single phase full-wave rectifier arrangements and a three-phase half-wave rectifier arrangement are described. Arrangements using cam-driven interrupters adjustable about the axis of the cam are described. The invention may be applied to control the speed of the A.C. commutator motor driving each section of a paper-making machine.
