[Class 102 (i)] [Also in Groups XXVI and XXXII] In piston-and-cylinder apparatus for pumps, in which the.piston 5 is subjected to high fluid pressure and in which the piston and the cylinder 4, Fig. 1, both have plain cylindrical walls between which is an annular cylindrical space having a thickness which is small compared with the diameter of the piston, an annular elastic element 6 of uniform thickness with plain cylindrical walls extends over the length of the piston and is attached to the piston and cylinder over its entire length, filling entirely the said cylindrical space without stress in such a manner that the piston can move axially in respect to the cylinder, the elastic element being deformed without sliding. The element 6 may be made of rubber or other incompressible or only slightly compressible material, and it may be vulcanized or glued to a cylinder and piston having a rectilinear or curvilinear axis. Fig. 8 shows a pump comprising a piston 39 operated by a rod 38 and associated with an automatically operating piston valve 51, a make-up orifice 43, and a delivery orifice 44. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that the elastic element may be subjected to initial compression. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
