Abstract

521,493. Torpedo tubes. PAINE, H. SCOTT-. Oct. 14, 1938, Nos. 29855 and 32908. [Class 9 (ii)] A torpedo tube, for use above water level on a highspeed motor boat is mounted for movement in the direction of its length and resilient means are provided between the tube and a fixed part of the mounting to absorb recoil due to the discharge of the torpedo. Fig. 1 shows a deck tube 5 supported at each side on a parallelogram linkwork frame 8; 9, 10, 11, which permits the tube to rise on firing against the action of piston and cylinder resilient devices 25 to absorb recoil. The links 8 at the rear are hinged at 31 to a turntable 22 and the front links 9 are connected to a member 18 sliding in arcuate guides 17, Fig. 2, the arrangement permitting the tube to be moved by screw gear 70 to an 'outboard firing position 57 or to inboard positions 47 which facilitate loading. Modifications; are described (1) in which the tube is mounted for longitudinal sliding movement to take up recoil, and (2) in which the pivotal connections, of the links 8, 9 are provided with spring devices in the form of torsion rods or rubber bushes to replace the spring device 25.
