Abstract
471,809. Launching torpedoes. THORNYCROFT & CO., Ltd., J. I., and THORNYCROFT, SIR J. E. March 9, 1936, No. 7038. [Class 9 (ii)] A torpedo launching tube normally arranged in a fore-and-aft direction along or adjacent to a gunwale of a motor torpedo boat, is pivotally mounted at its rear end and means are provided at its forward end portion adapted to support the tube and to enable it to be swung outboard into a position making a small angle with the centre line of the vessel, in order that a torpedo may be fired substantially in the direction in which the vessel is pointing. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the launching tube 2 is provided with a vertical pivot pin 3 mounted in bearings attached to the side of the vessel, and the movable support for the forward end portion comprises a vertical plate 11 having a hinge connection 9 with the tube, the lower edge of the plate being provided with a foot portion 12 which slides in a guideway 14, 14a secured to the deck. The support is caused to move by a nut 15 secured to the top of the plate 11 and engaging with a rotatable screwed traversing rod 16. The foot of the supporting member 12 is permitted the necessary sideways movement relative to the fixed guideway. In the modification shown in Fig. 8, the pivot 19 is arranged below and on the centre line of the tube, which is supported by a toothed rack 22 movable in a fixed guideway 23 by means of a pinion 24.
