Abstract
520,890. Projectiles; air-mines. BICKEL, E. Oct. 31, 1938, No. 31416. [Classes 9 (i) and 9 (ii)] Projectiles designed to lay a system of airmines in the path of hostile aircraft comprise a number of such mines adapted to be released, in one construction, simultaneously, or in a second construction, serially. An air-mine comprises a bomb connected by a long wire to a parachute. In the first form, Fig. 1, the mines c are packed around a central stem p, the bombs e being conical bodies on which the wire k is coiled. The parachutes o are packed in expansible capsules f tied to the end of the wire coil by windings of fuze-cord v. The time fuze a fires an ignition train n in the stem b, which ignites a charge i and causes the projectile base and jacket d to be rejected rearwardly, thus releasing the air-mines, which are thrown off laterally by centrifugal force. The fuze-train n also ignites the fuze-cords v through ports q. The cords burn out and so release the capsules f, which expand and fall away, so freeing the parachutes. In the second form, Fig. 3, four air-mines are arranged in superposed order on the central stem v of the projectile. The mines comprise bombs s<SP>1</SP> - s<SP>4</SP>, wire coils t<SP>1</SP> - t<SP>4</SP>, and parachutes u<SP>1</SP> - u<SP>4</SP>. The bomb s<SP>4</SP> comprises the projectile head b and the stem v. The parachutes are folded into pans w<SP>1</SP> - w<SP>4</SP>. When the projectile jacket d is blown off, the lowermost mine unit leaves the stem v and opens out. The withdrawal of the parachute pan w<SP>1</SP> release a spring ring x from a groove in the stem v and frees the second mine, and similarly the other mines are launched in succession.
