Abstract
520,355. Cultivating mushrooms. DOBROUCHKESS, L. P. Oct. 19, 1938, No. 30257. Convention date, Dec. 8, 1937. [Class 6 (ii)] In apparatus for cultivating mushrooms, the cultivating medium and the mycelium-containing manure are arranged in separate compartments communicating with each other through small openings, different parts of the manure being kept at different temperatures. The manure is first treated to remove the cellulose layer covering the straw and the plants from the vasculose. Mycelium obtained from the germinated. spores of agaricus campestris is arranged in the manure at a temperature of 27 C. The pH of the mass is maintained at about 6À8 before and throughout its utilisation. The manure box has perforated side walls 8 carrying a series of fibro-cement shelves 7 loaded with earth 17 of pH of approx. 6À8, narrow spaces 9 communicating with the manure 16. Air penetrates through openings 11 in the floor 3 to the space 10 and escapes at the top through lantern light 5. A hollow column 12 made of porous material, but with an impervious outer surface, dips into water in the annular cup 13. Water rises by capillarity and evaporates inside the column to cool the centre of the manure 16 to approximately 5C. below the outside portions. Alternatively the inside temperature can be obtained by circulating a cold brine through suitably arranged pipes. Electric heaters (not shown) under the shelves 7 controlled by a thermostat 15 maintain the desired temperature; the ventilating fan 14 may be automatically started if this is exceeded. The earth layer is maintained by watering with about 5 per cent. of moisture, and the mycelium forms filaments which produce mushrooms 18which are collected by opening doors 6. The brackets containing the manure may be fixed in groups on frames 19 which are supported on the box's uprights by hooking on knobs 20 to facilitate easy replacement of the mycelium. In another arrangement the layers of manure and earth may be arranged horizontally if separated by a partition leaving only narrow communication openings..
