VON, 22, Rheinstrasse, Zeuthen, Brandenburg, Germany, and TURNER, A. W. WALLACE-, 1, Albert Place, Kensington, London. June 2, 1934, Nos. 16502, 18901, and 30392. [Classes 6 (ii) and 58] Apparatus for raising plants from seed with or without soil comprises a tray-like receptacle in which the seed is supported on a perforated tray or trays and which is fitted with means for supplying and discharging liquid. One or more walls of the receptacle may be made double to constitute a heat insulating jacket through which temperature-regulating fluid may be circulated or in which a heater may be placed. The apparatus is applicable for the treatment of seed with a nutrient liquid as described in Specification 439,421. Fig. 1 shows apparatus comprising three superposed receptacles 11 supported in a metal frame with doors 16, 17 and walls 14 of sheet metal having a heat insulating layer secured thereto. There is a seed tray 111 in each of the receptacles 11 and liquid is supplied to the receptacles from a storage tank 117 through a pipe 118. One or more of the walls may be of glass. As shown in Fig. 2, the liquid is distributed in each tray by a pipe 121, and it is discharged from the trays to a sump 27 by a pipe 123. A pump 28 raises the liquid through a heater 29 to the tank 117. A modification is described in which there are several seed trays in each receptacle and means are provided for raising and lowering the trays from outside the apparatus. In a further modification of large-scale apparatus comprising a series of long receptacles in a house heated by hot air, each receptacle has a depression or sump through which liquid is supplied and discharged, the opening of a plugged outlet allowing the liquid to pass from the sump of one receptacle to that of the receptacle below. Apparatus as described may be provided with means for subjecting the seeds and plants to radiations of specific wavelength, as from a mercury vapour lamp, or to white light from which certain radiations havebeenremoved.
