Abstract

Sept. 15, 1938, No. 26989, [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Altering physical structure; bending and twisting.-To increase the strength of round metal bars by cold working, the bars are rotated in the cold whilst in a bent condition, with or without simultaneous twisting. The bars may be bent first and then rotated, or bent and rotated simultaneously and the rotation may be uniform along the bar or varied to produce twisting. When twisting is produced the bending may be within the elastic limits of the material, but without twisting the bending should be beyond the elastic limit, and the bending may be in one plane or in three dimensions, and may be produced by the weight of the bar or by other means. When bent beyond the elastic limit the bars may be straightened subsequently. The axis of the bar may be given an oscillatory movement during rotation by bending on a curve having points of inflection or by moving the ends periodically. Apparatus for carrying out the method may comprise chucks 7, 7<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1, rotatable in sleeves 9, 9<SP>1</SP> which are supported by trunnions 25 on pedestals 10, 10<SP>1</SP> adjustable on guides 11. A bar g to be treated is gripped by the chucks, and bent to the required degree by adjusting the sleeves about the trunnions, after which one or both chucks are rotated. Instead of being gripped by chucks, the ends of a bar may be bent round transverse pins on the shanks 8 and held by cotters in the pins. In a modified apparatus the bar is supported in the bent condition on horizontal tables during rotation. For treating continuous lengths of bar stock, the bar is passed through two sets of rollers 19, 20, Fig. 6, arranged at an angle as shown so that the bar g will be bent in passing from one set to the other. The rollers 19 are mounted in a frame 21 carried by bearings 22 and rotated about the axis of the bar so that the rollers will grip the bar and rotate it whilst it is being bent.
