Abstract

519,524. Torsion springs. DOBLHOFF, W. Aug. 19, 1938, No. 24513. Convention date, Aug. 26, 1937. [Class 108 (iii)] Bar springs are held in radial slots in connecting rings, the slots being closed at their outer ends. As shown in Fig. 3, bars 1 arranged about an axis 2 are held in brackets in a mounting 6 and are oscillated by a lever arm 7 attached to the central portion of the bars. The bars 1, Fig. 1, are fixed in radial 'slots in end and centre rings 8 by inner rings 10 expanded by conical bolts 11 and prevented from moving longitudinally by pegs 13 or rings 15. A tube 25 may be attached 'to the central ring 8 and overlap the end rings to prevent excessive bending of the bars. The bars may be secured in the radial slots by wedges or where two bars are housed in the same slot a radial wedge may be driven between the bars. In Fig. 10 the bars are secured by slotting the metal between two radial slots and driving a conical pin 20 in the slot 19 to expand the metal against the sides of the bars. The metal between the slots for the bars may be extended between the bars and reduced in thickness to form an abutment against which the ,springs bear in a progressive manner under load. The seating surface of the bars in the slots may be bevelled or recessed so that the ratio of the stresses set up in the bars by bending and torsion may be varied. In order to obtain a uniform stress in the bars the depth of the bar may be reduced at h<2>, Fig. 1, or the thickness or if the bar springs are of round cross-section the effect may be obtained by changing the diameter or by flattening the cross-section. The ends of the bars may be secured to the holders 8 by filling the spaces between the bars and slots with a pressed or cast and hardening or solidifying mass 31, Fig. 13, such as artificial resin, metallic alloys &c. The material is poured into a two part 'mould 35 having a shaped end plate and a cover 38 with inlet orifice 39. A plug 40 is inserted in the bar-spacing bush' 32 and a head 41 which may be integral with the plug 40 is used to guide the material around the bars. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the bars are formed integrally with the holders. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
