Abstract
519,128. Welding-fluxes : alloys. VEREINIGTE ALUMINIUM-WERKE AKT.-GES. Sept. 15, 1938, No. 27011. Convention date, Oct. 30, 1937. [Classes 82 (i) and 82 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] Welding rods of aluminium or aluminium alloys are given a coating of flux consisting entirely of salts by making a pasty mixture of at least two different salts with at least four different ions, at least some of the anions being combined with the cations for which they have the lower affinity. The reaction which occurs between the salts results in a tough and firmlyadherent coating. A coating for use in welding aluminium-magnesium alloys consists of sodium fluoride, sodium chloride, and lithium chloride, reaction occurring between the sodium fluoride and lithium chloride. For other alloys, such as those containing manganese, small amounts of chromium fluoride and of potassium sulphate, fluoride, chloride and the like may be added. The coating may consist of several layers of different composition, in which case the weight ratio of fluorine to chlorine in the layer next to the rod is preferably greater than, or equal to, two to one, the corresponding ratio in succeeding layers being less than, or equal to, two to one. An example is given of compositions for the mixtures for a three-layer coating for an aluminium alloy rod containing approximately 2.0 per cent. of magnesium and 1.0 per cent. of manganese.
