Abstract

519,085. Fluid seals for rotating shafts. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Sept. 23, 1938, No. 27770. Convention date, Oct. 14, 1937. [Class 122 (v)] A fluid seal for a shaft rotating in a housing comprises an extensible resilient sealing member 54 disposed about the shaft 36 and abutting the housing 20, a sealing washer 53 consisting of a non - metallic ring having metallic particles dispersed therein and disposed about the shaft between a portion of the shaft and the sealing member, and resilient means 60 for extending the sealing member 54 axially of the shaft whereby the member is sealed to the housing and to the washer, and the washer is sealed to the shaft. Metal washers 62, 64 may be arranged between the spring 60 and the member 54, the washer 64 having spaced keys 66 to engage recesses 68 in the ring 53 to prevent relative rotation. The washer 62 may be dispensed with by accommodating one end of the spring in the bore of the member 54. In a modification, the member 54 is substantially U-shaped in cross-section with one of its limbs keyed into the housing 20. The member 54 may be formed from polymerized isoprene or chloroprene, rubber, synthetic rubber, or cloth impregnated with any of these rubberlike compositions. The washer 53 may be formed from thermo-setting resin of the phenol formaldehyde derivative type, synthetic rubber, polymerized isoprene or chloroprene, or moulded fibrous material, and contains 25 to 60 per cent. bronze powder, or powdered tin, lead, leadcoated copper, or iron.
