Abstract

1287416 Seals DOWTY SEALS Ltd 9 Oct 1969 [31 Oct 1968 24 Jan 1969] 51569/68 and 4138/69 Heading F2B A sealing ring 1 comprises a sealing lip 13 between two surfaces 11, 12, the surface 12 having projections which, when in contact with either a shaft or housing, provide trapeziumshaped areas of contact, Fig. 6 (not shown). Upon rotation of the seal relative to the shaft or housing, these create a back-pressure preventing liquid passing the seal, the pressure between the contact area and surface increasing progressively away from the lip. The projections may be provided by a continuous or discontinuous projecting rib 14 of triangular section (Fig. 3 shows the rib in section at AA, Fig. 2) which undulates towards and away from the lip. The seal comprises a metal reinforcement 8 and a garter spring 10 biasing the lip 13 either against a rotating shaft or a fixed housing, the seal being mounted on the rotating shaft in the latter case. The seal may have a plate spring 33 mounted between reinforcing members 31, 32 to bias the lip against a relatively rotating collar. The seal can be split into two or more parts and the trapezium shaped contact area may result from an initially rectangular area.
