Abstract

518,662. Photo-mechanical printing-surfaces. CUSDEN, J. W., and DAWSON, H. E. Aug. 29, 1938, No. 12845. [Class 98 (ii)] A surface plate, or film is coated with a silver halide emulsion of the type which yields a positive by direct development, exposed to the original to be reproduced, developed, fixed, washed and treated to render the colloid at the image parts more or less insoluble in water and is used as a printing plate. Preferably a metolhydroquinone developer and a fixing bath of hypo and potassium metabisulphite is used. After drying, the developed layer is treated in a bleach-hardening bath which may comprise (1) copper sulphate, sulphuric, acid, potassium bromide, and potassium bichromate or (2) sodium chloride, copper chloride, and potassium bichromate; or (3) copper sulphate, potassium bromide, and chromic acid. The damping rollers in the printing press may be moistened with water to which ammonia and glycerine are added and an ink may be used comprising standard collotype ink, petroleum jelly, and oleum sassafras. The process may be used for reproducing originals prepared by known processes of colour photography.
