Abstract

518,507. Cleaning locomotive smoke-boxes by jet-apparatus. ROYLE, T. W., and McCALLUM P. Aug. 27, 1938, No. 25220. [Class 78 (i)] [Also in Group XII] Ash is ejected from locomotive smoke boxes by several spaced jet devices distributed and directed to deliver near the base of a heap of accumulated ash and thus prevent arching of the ash. As illustrated three nozzles are arranged on each side of the central delivery nozzle 4<4> which delivers through the outlet 14. The two innermost side nozzles 4<3> and 4<5> point in the same direction as the nozzle 4<4> but the remaining side nozzles point directly towards the outlet. Each nozzle or any combination of nozzles can be supplied simultaneously or in succession with wet steam by a branch 11 from the injector delivery pipe 12. Deflector plates 15 may assist, in directing the ash to the outlet.
