Abstract

518,473. Medicines ; sterilizing liquids. STOKES MACHINE CO., F. J., FLOSDORF, E. W., WESTIN, C. J., and STOKES, F. J. June 24, 1938, No. 18787. [Classes 49 and 81 (i)] [Also in Groups III and XIII] Refers to Specifications 513,466 and 513,562 and comprises an improved method and apparatus for desiccating biological substances such as sera, guinea-pig compliment, vaccines, breast milk &c. by degassing, freezing or self-freezing and dehydration by evaporation in vacuo through the agency of a regenerable chemical desiccant. The specimens are placed in glass containers 53, Figs. 1 and 3, each connected to one of two exhaust manifolds 58, 59, via a tube 51 and a nozzle 86 controlled by a valve 52. A series of containers is arranged on each side and may be supported by perforated screens 91 on adjustable trays 54 whereby a freezing-mixture may be applied prior to desiccating. Desiccation is effected by operating the exhaust pump 22, air and water vapour passing through perforated trays charged with desiccant and so arranged that smaller trays 32 alternate with larger ones 34 which are provided with circular, central air channels 48. In a modification the trays are disposed vertically. If the specimens are to be degassed before drying, the valves 37, 38 of the pump are so regulated that frothing just occurs. Some specimens may be frozen, by exhaustion, without the use of a freezing-mixture. When exhausted, the desiccant is regenerated by air blown through a lagged heater 24 and valve 60, the pump 22 being shut off and the air-tight cover 26 removed. After the specimens are completely desiccated, the necks of the containers are sealed off by a flame after admitting dry air through a drier 117, furnished with a hollow needle 110 which is pushed through the rubber connector 88. The containers may be formed with a reduced neck closed by a recessed rubber stopper through which a hollow needle may be inserted to supply liquid for restoring the specimens to their original state.
