Abstract

518,353. Treating sewage. LETCH, P. A., and BOLTON, J. F. Sept. 20, 1938, No, 27343. [Class 111] Sludge is withdrawn from the bottom of a sludge digestion tank and delivered at the surface through injectorlike devices so that the thick liquid or scum on the surface is broken up and drawn down into the body of the liquid. Fig. 1 shows a circular tank with a central hollow column a<4> and a bridge c moved round the tank on wheels engaging rails on the wall of the central column and of the outer tank, by an electric motor d. The bridge also supports a second motor e<1> driving a pump e, which lifts sludges entering the column a<4> through apertures a<5>, and delivers it to a pipe e<3> on the bridge. The pipe e<3> has branches or nozzles f, each of which discharges the sludge down a bell-mouth pipe g, having its mouth below the surface of the liquid so that scum on the surface is drawn down the pipe. The pipes g are supported from the bridge by a carrier g<1> adjustable relatively to the bridge to allow for variation of the liquid level. Raw sludge for treatment may be supplied through a pipe r to the inlet of the pump and delivered through the nozzles f so that it is thoroughly mixed with liquid undergoing treatment. The method of treatment could be applied in a rectangular tank with bridge &c. moving to-and-fro thereover or with several fixed bridges, each having a series of nozzles.
