Abstract

517,471. Momentum power storing apparatus ; flywheels. GEORG, O. July 26, 1938, No. 22240. Convention date, July 28. 1937. [Classes 10 and 122 (i)] [Also in Groups V and XXII] In a machine comprising a flywheel 1 which can be coupled or uncoupled from a rotating driving shaft, the flywheel is provided with displaceable masses so that its moment of inertia varies during its acceleration. Fig. 1 shows a screw press in which a bevel wheel 8 on the driving shaft can be moved into engagement with a bevel flywheel 7 to rotate a spindle 1 journalled in a pedestal 4, a press slide 6 being moved upwardly by the engagement of a nut 5 on the slide with a threaded portion of the spindle 1. Two heavy weights 12, 13, suspended from pins 10, 11 on the flywheel 7 and attached by links 14, 15 to a slidable sleeve 16 on the spindle 1 are held adjacent the spindle when the pulley 8 and flywheel 7 are first engaged by the engagement of the sleeve 16 with nuts 19, 20 on rods 17, 18 attached to the slide 6. As the slide 6 moves upwards the weights 12, 13 fly outwards and the momentum of the flywheel increases to a maximum before impact occurs. After impact the wheel 7 stops and the weights drop, the recoil in some cases being sufficient to produce return movement of the slide. If necessary the return movement may be completed by engagement of a bevel wheel 9 on the driving shaft with the flywheel 7. The driving shaft may be slightly inclined and the pulley 9 may be 10 to 20 per cent. smaller than the pulley 8 so that the centrifugal force is insufficient to raise the weights 12, 13 during the return movement. In another construction the flywheel 7 carries pivoted weights which are held by springs so as to surround closely the hub of the flywheel until the speed of the flywheel reaches about 90 per cent. of its maximum.
