Abstract

517,341. Press-button switches. LIST. H. July 25, 1938, Nos. 21966 and 21967. Convention dates, Oct. 12, 1937, and Oct. 16, 1937. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, March 3, 1939.] [Class 38 (v)] A press-button switch is so constructed that the pressure necessary to actuate it increases up to a certain point in the travel of the contactpiece and then suddenly diminishes, so as to secure rapid closing, and the increase in pressure can be regulated. For this purpose the plungerbody of the switch is formed with transverse bores in which are balls 18 pressed outwardly by springs 19. At a certain point in the travel of the plunger these balls are pressed inwardly by an inclined portion of the casing thus offering a resistance to the motion of the plunger until they are past the constricted portion of the casing. To regulate this resistance a conical member 27 is arranged to slide in the plunger without rotation, so as to press the inner ends of the springs 19 outwardly. This is effected by turning the press button 16, which is secured to the plunger so as to rotate without longitudinal motion by means of a screw 25 and is provided with a screwed extension 24 engaging the member 27. The contacts 7a, 7b are bridged by a piece 5 rotatably mounted on the plunger Several pairs of contacts in parallel are so arranged that one pair is always bridged first, thus preserving the others from damage by sparking. In a modification the helical screws 19 are replaced by a hairpin-spring, the tension of which can be regulated by a screw pressing on its bent portion. The resistance of the balls to the motion of the plunger can also be adjusted by making the constricted portion of the casing of different diameters in different axial planes and turning the plunger until the balls are in the plane required. The contact-disc 5 may be replaced by a ball rotating freely in a cage attached to the plunger. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes a switch without the pressure device. This subject-matter does not occur in the Specification as accepted.
