Abstract

517,232. Charging and discharging batteries. ASSOCIATED ELECTRIC VEHICLE MANUFACTURERS, Ltd., and LEE. A. F. July 23, 1938, No. 21871. [Class 38 (iv] . Two batteries are charged in turn under the control of electrically interlocked contactors 2, 3 so that one only of the batteries can be charged at a time and when fully charged, as determined by a relay which opens when a predetermined number of ampere-hours of charge has been given, the battery is cut off supply and the second battery automatically connected thereto. In the arrangement shown two batteries 4 and 5 and their associated ampere-hour meters 25 are adapted for connection to a panel 1 by means of three-pin plugs and sockets. The supply to the panel from A.C. mains 20, 21, through transformer 22, rectifier 23 and a further three-pin plug and socket, is controlled by a main contactor 33 in the primary circuit of the transformer. If, sav, battery 4 is the first to be connected current from it closes contactor 2 which completes a closing circuit for contactor 33 so that the battery is placed on charge. If, now, battery 5 is plugged in, contactor 3 is prevented from being closed to place this battery also on charge by auxiliary contacts 7 on contactor 2 which are open when contactor 2 is closed. When battery 4 has received a predetermined charge, normally-closed contacts 26 are opened by the ampere-hour meter, contactor 2 opens, and charging ceases. Auxiliary contacts 7, however, are closed with the opening of contactor 2 so that contactor 3 closes to place battery 5 on charge. Finally, when both batteries have been charged the charging apparatus is shut down.
